Surface Pro 9: The next 2-in-1 Microsoft laptop

Microsoft’s Surface Pro 8 delivered on our expectations, with slim bezels, a stunning 120Hz display, and adequate battery life. We are only a few weeks away from Microsoft revealing a new Surface Pro 9. How will it appear? How will it fare? Fortunately, there are enough rumors to give us a good idea of what to expect.

This Surface Pro 9 5G Review isn’t going to blow you away. It will most likely be a minor update with a few changes to the Surface Pro line. Still, Microsoft isn’t a slouch when it comes to development, and they could sneak in some cool features here and there.

CPU upgrade

While Microsoft has been tight-lipped about the upcoming Microsoft Surface Pro 9 laptop, it is a foregone conclusion that the new device will be powered by Intel’s 12th-generation Core processors. Following in the footsteps of previous Surface Pro launches, we can expect an i5 and an i7 version.

However, there is some evidence that Microsoft will use more powerful P-Series processors, such as the i5-1240p. This makes sense given that the P-Series has a longer battery life. Aside from one,

The most surprising rumor going around comes from Windows Central’s Zac Bowden. He claims that Microsoft will combine the Pro 9 and Surface Pro X and offer an ARM-based version. There aren’t many differences between the devices, and Microsoft already sells the Surface Laptop 4 in both Intel and ARM versions, so it makes sense.

The ARM-based Surface Pro 9 5G review, on the other hand, is expected to use Qualcomm’s powerful Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 chip. Microsoft even showed up at Qualcomm’s release event late last year, hinting that the chip would be used in Surface devices. This might be it.

Display

As far as we know, the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 laptop will retain the same display as the Surface Pro 8. This means it will have a 13-inch display with a resolution of 2880 x 1920 and a refresh rate of 120Hz. For a device of this price, this is already a great display with some advanced features.

We’d love to see an OLED or mini-LED display on the Surface Pro 9, but that’s wishful thinking at this point. Instead, the Surface Pro 9 will retain the Surface Pro 8’s “PixelSense” display. There will be no differences in the screen between the two devices.

Battery and Ports

Microsoft claimed the Surface Pro 8 had 16-hour battery life, but real-world reviews revealed otherwise. In fact, the Surface battery life is one of the line’s weak points. So we can expect Microsoft to address this issue with the Surface Pro 9, correct?

Unfortunately, no. According to rumors, Microsoft is keeping the same battery in the new Surface Pro 9 as they did in the previous iteration. However, if the Pro 9 is powered by an Alder Lake P-Series processor, it may have better battery efficiency due to specific performance cores in the processor. Once again, there’s no way of knowing. We’ll just have to wait and see.

According to rumors, Microsoft will include a 60W charger rather than the 65W charger that came with the Surface Pro 8. This could indicate Microsoft’s confidence in their new device’s battery life, thanks to Intel’s Alder Lake processors.

Microsoft does not appear to be changing the ports on the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 laptop. They’ll keep the Surface Pro 8’s two USB-C ports and one Surface Connect port.

Design

It will be available in new colors, but the overall design will be the same as the Surface Pro 8. This can be a good thing because it means that all of your Surface Pro 8 accessories will be transferable. We’re not sure if Microsoft will release any new accessories to accompany the updated device.

If the Microsoft Surface Pro 9 and Surface Pro X merge, we may see some changes brought over to combine elements from both.

Finally, we’ve heard that Microsoft is supporting the Right to Repair. Microsoft hinted at it in an official Surface video on YouTube, in which the company announces its acceptance of the EU’s new Right to Repair rules. Although the video is for the Surface Laptop SE, we anticipate that Microsoft will use it across its product line.

Surface Pro 9 release date

Microsoft has not made any specific announcements about the Surface Pro 9 release date, but we can make an educated guess based on previous surface releases, which all occurred in October means the Surface Pro 9 release date might be released in October as well. Only the Surface Pro 5 stood out when it was unveiled in June 2017. We are confident in an October release date, though the exact date is still unknown.

Microsoft usually releases a Surface-specific product in the fall, so it’s not out of the question that the Surface Pro 9 will be announced then.

Surface Pro 9 Price

We haven’t heard any pricing rumors for the Surface Pro 9 5G review. However, we can get a good idea of what to expect based on previous Surface Pro pricing.

The Surface Pro 8 offered significant upgrades over the Surface Pro 7 and was significantly more expensive, but the Surface Pro 7 was less expensive than the Surface Pro 6 because it did not offer much more. Each time the Surface Pro undergoes significant changes, the price rises significantly. The following price chart shows the trend:

We don’t expect it to be significantly more expensive than its predecessor. It will most likely be priced between $999 for the base i5 model and $1,200 for the i7 and ARM models. However, you will not receive a Type Cover for that price, as it is sold separately.
