Today, Google unveiled Gemini, a multimodal large language model, and assured that the AI model will be integrated into both Search and Ads in the upcoming year.
As for its application in Search, Gemini is currently undergoing testing, with plans for availability in Search, Ads, and various other Google products in the following months. During these tests, Google reported a noteworthy 40% reduction in latency for Search Generative Experience responses in English within the U.S., along with unspecified quality improvements.
Inquiries about how Gemini will alter Search were posed to Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis by Platformer. In typical fashion, Google maintained a level of ambiguity, primarily focusing on SGE (Search Generative Experience) rather than discussing Search comprehensively, which could potentially convey meaningful insights.
You’re now saying that Gemini will come to search next year. How do you see it changing the search experience?
Pichai: We’re already experimenting with it in the search generative experience, and as we are experimenting with it, it’s driving improvements across the board. We think about Gemini as foundational — it will work across all our products. Search is no different.
One of the things search has been pushing hard on is multimodality in general. But today they have had to do all the hard work of making search multimodal. Gemini as a foundational model gives them that capability [natively], so I think that’s an area where they will innovate.
Do you think over the medium term, Gemini in search increases the number of times that you get the information you need from the results page without having to visit a website?
Pichai: Our fundamental vision is that people come to search to experience the richness and the diversity of the web and the content ecosystem. So even though with search generative experience we can expand what we do, we’re actually designing the product in a. way so that people can go explore. And I think that’s what users want. I view it as a fundamental value proposition of search, so that’d be part of our goal as we evolve the product.
What is Google Gemini?
Officially designated as Gemini 1.0? It stands as a substantial language model capable of processing diverse types of information, consisting of text, images, audio, video, and code. This positions Google in closer competition with OpenAI’s GPT model. Google introduced three distinct “sizes” of Gemini:
- Ultra, tailored for highly intricate tasks.
- Pro, identified as Google’s “highest performing model,” designed for a wide array of tasks.
- Nano, created for on-device tasks, specifically for Android phones like Pixel.
Gemini is now integrated into Google Bard, where Bard is now powered by a refined version of Gemini Pro. This improvement equips Bard with advanced reasoning, planning, and understanding capabilities, marking Bard’s most substantial upgrade since its launch. Currently available in English in over 170 countries, Bard has plans for further expansion soon.
Additionally, Google announced the upcoming debut of Bard Advanced, a new version fueled by Gemini Ultra, set to launch early next year. The pricing details for Bard Advanced remain unclear.
A report from Google DeepMind revealed that Gemini outperformed GPT-3.5 across six out of eight industry benchmarks. However, it’s worth noting that OpenAI has introduced GPT-4 since March, introducing another dimension to the evolving landscape of advanced language models.
While Gemini is currently in the testing phase within Search, Google has officially affirmed its forthcoming integration into the overall Google Search experience. Additionally, for users accustomed to leveraging ChatGPT for their daily tasks, exploring the enhanced Bard may be worthwhile to assess whether Bard can match or surpass the capabilities of the free version of ChatGPT, which operates on GPT-3.5.
