iPhone 14 Pro feature: Do you remember when Apple unveiled the iPhone X? It was the first iPhone with a display notch, which quickly gained near-universal acclaim. This small black bump on the screen proved that Apple had lost its touch and was unable to innovate. What would Steve Jobs think of this? We all laughed so hard.
Apple, for one, was not amused. We didn’t realize it at the time, but the notch was the beginning of something truly amazing. With the release of the iPhone 14 Pro, Apple revealed what it had up its sleeve. The notch turned out to be the incredible Dynamic Island, giving Apple the last laugh. It’s a feature I never knew I needed, but boy, do I need it now.
A delightful surprise
In case you missed Apple’s September 7 event, Dynamic Island is a completely unexpected reimagining of the notch. Instead of a static black slab housing the Face ID sensors and front-facing camera, you now get a shape-shifting, purpose-altering, definition-defying slab that appears to do everything. It does have a stupid name, but that’s where the stupidity ends and the superlative begins.
Are you making music? Swipe the app away, and your current game information appears in Dynamic Island. Incoming phone call? The Dynamic Island enlarges to reveal who is on the other end of the phone line. Want to verify a purchase with your face? Look at the Face ID animation bursting through Dynamic Island. You get the picture.
Who in their right mind would take something so, well, functional and turn it into something so joyful? Who could take a grudging concession — you can’t hide the Face ID sensors under the display, at least not yet — and turn it into something you adore? I can’t think of anyone else who could pull this off.
Do you think Google has the guts and the chutzpah to try something like this? Would Samsung even attempt it? No way. Samsung’s interns are most likely composing inane tweets mocking Apple’s latest feature as we speak. Allow a few months for the company to respond with its own C-list imitation.

The design freak’s dream
Apple has completely flipped the script on what was once a universal symbol of derision, a reason to avoid the iPhone, a “yeah, but” rebuttal to every iPhone selling point. It’s the most unexpected surprise of any Apple event I can recall and by far the most welcome.
You might think I’m being dramatic here. After all, it’s only The Notch 2.0, isn’t it? Wrong. The notch was boring, inert, and uninteresting. It held something wonderful, but it lacked form. And adequate isn’t good enough for Apple’s design freaks. Everything must be excellent. Dynamic Island has made amends in spectacular fashion. It was only fitting that it was unveiled by Apple’s Chief Design Freak, Alan Dye.
This is a feature that no other smartphone has because it is entirely dependent on both software and hardware working in perfect harmony. No other company can do that.
However, it is more than that. It’s one of those rare features that makes you feel a little giddy, much like another hardware-software collaboration, Universal Control. Whatever you think of Apple, no one else can replicate that feeling quite like it. Enough with the gushing. It’s finally time to start saving for a new iPhone 14 Pro.
