How to move Windows 11 Taskbar to Top Screen

Some Windows users may want to move their taskbars to the position of their liking. For example, some might want it on the right or the left, While some users want to set the taskbar on the top position of the desktop screen.

Windows 11 now allows the users to put the taskbar in the position of their liking. But there need to be a few simple registry tweaks. Although the users must remember that Microsoft does not support this taskbar movement, they may face some bugs associated with the shift.

Moving the taskbar to the top will position the start icon in the upper left corner and keep the taskbar icons positioned at the center. But if you click on the clock, the pop-up menu will appear in the below-left corner.

Steps to Move Windows 11 Taskbar To The Top

Here are the steps to help you move the Windows taskbar to the top.

Open The Regedit Option

To open the Regedit option, you can go to the “run” menu from the start icon on the left of the taskbar. You can also use (Windows+R). Now you have to type “regedit.” and search. When asked to confirm, say yes. 

Navigate To 

HKEY_CURRENT_USER >Software >Microsoft >Windows >CurrentVersion >Explorer >StuckRects3.

Open The Settings Key

Double-click on the settings key to open and edit.

Change The 5th Value. 

In the second row, change the fifty value from 03 to 01. To do this, you have to delete 03 and type 01, then click Ok.

Change The Same Value

In case you are using more than one monitor and require the taskbars on the other screens to be on the top, then you have to modify the same value to 01. 

“HKEY_CURRENT_USER >Software >Microsoft >Windows >CurrentVersion

 >Explorer >MMStuckRects3” folder. 

Close Regedit

For the next step, you need to close the Regedit.

Launch The Command Prompt 

Now you have to launch the command prompt in administrative mode. To do that, you have to search for “cmd” and right-click on the result, and select the “run as administrator” option. 

Click “yes” when prompted to confirm.

Stop And Restart The Explorer.Exe Process

To stop and restart the explorer.exe process, you have to enter 

“taskkill /f /im explorer.exe and hitting Enter followed by start explorer.exe.”

These are about all the steps you need to go through to move your taskbar to the top. However, to align your start button and the other icons to the left, you follow the steps below. 

Align The Taskbar Icons To The Left

To align your start button and the other icons to the left, follow the steps below. 

  • Select taskbar settings by right-clicking on the taskbar.
  • Click on taskbar behaviors to expand it. 
  • Now, from the taskbar alignment, select left. 
  • Your icons should be on the left if you have gone through all these steps correctly. 

However, if you want to keep things as they were before, meaning shifting the taskbar back to the bottom, you just have to change “01” to “03” in “HKEY_CURRENT_USER >Software >Microsoft >Windows >CurrentVersion >Explorer >StuckRects3.”

More Methods (Windows 11 Taskbar)

If you want to move the taskbar to any other position of the screen instead of the default position, then follow these steps-

  1. Click on the black portion of the taskbar. 
  2. Now you should hold down the primary mouse button and drag the cursor to the different side of the screen where you want to place the taskbar. As an example, you can move it vertically to the right side of the screen.
  3. Once you have dragged the mouse pointer to your required position, you must release the mouse button. 

The Windows 98 and Windows Me users need to enable the taskbar moving option. For the Windows XP and Windows Vista users, they should disable the Lock the taskbar option. 

Reset The Taskbar To The Default Position

To reset the taskbar to the default position, follow these steps. 

  • Windows XP and Vista users can click on the fix-it button.
  • Run in the file downloading box.
  • In the fix-it wizard, follow the steps. 

This process will terminate all the windows, so be careful before executing it.
