Skate 4: It’s been over ten years since the last game in the popular Skate series, and fans have been wondering when EA will return to this unique take on the skateboarding genre. During that time, the skating genre experienced a significant revival. Not only has the Tony Hawk series made a comeback with the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2 remake, but other games such as Skater XL and Skatebird have emerged to fill the market gap.
However, no game has ever come close to filling the void that Skate did. Thankfully, we know Skate 4 will take place. Since its initial announcement at EA Play in 2020, there has been very little information about this highly anticipated return to a more grounded style of the skateboarding video game. Nonetheless, we’ve learned a few details about what the next Skate game will look like and when we can expect to play it. Everything we know about Skate 4 is listed below.
Skate 4 Platforms
Platforms are not a priority for EA to provide details on because there is no release date. But, based on what we know about the game’s timeline, we believe it’s safe to say this game will be available on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S consoles, at the very least. The PC was initially a wild card because previous games did not appear on that platform. The official Skate Twitter account, on the other hand, shared a simple video of a live-action skater performing a kickflip over an old computer monitor.
The monitor then comes to life, bearing the Skate logo. If that wasn’t clear enough, the text accompanying the video simply says “PC Confirmation.exe,” indicating that this new Skate has been confirmed for PC.
In terms of last-generation consoles, the longer the game is delayed, the less likely it will be a cross-generational title.

Skate 4 Release date
Again, we’ve been waiting for over a decade — and now more than a year — since Skate 4 was officially announced as in development, and we still have no idea when it will be finished. Full Circle hasn’t even given us a year yet, so we’ll probably have to wait a long time before we can start grinding and kick-flipping on our consoles. To keep expectations in check, if we had to guess — and at this point, guessing is all anyone can do — we’d hope for a late 2022 release. It may arrive early, but it is best to prepare for the worst-case scenario.
Following an earnings call at EA in which Andrew Wilson stated that the game “will launch soon,” leaker Tom Henderson claimed that the game was already in playtesting, which could bode well for a 2022 release. However, the most recent video we’ve seen of the game in action looks extremely early. In fact, they even self-describe it as being “pre-pre-pre-alpha gameplay.”
Trailer
The first trailer (though they are stretching the definition of “trailer”) we received was in the summer of 2021. This trailer is titled “We’re Working On It,” and it could just as easily be a picture of a sign that says that. There was no gameplay, no cutscenes, no bullshots, and no pre-rendered assets. What we do see are stunt performers, developers telling us how early the game is, and reactions to people who claim to have seen the game. But not us — we haven’t seen it yet.
The Still Working On It trailer is the only natural follow-up to the We’re Working On It trailer. This trailer shows a lot more progress and actual game footage, though it’s still clearly lacking in textures and polish.
The trailer is straightforward in showing numerous glitches and bugs while stating that they are still working on it. They say they’re listening to feedback and figuring out the game’s direction as they go, but they emphasize the goal of giving players more tools to express themselves and customize the game.

Skate 4 Multiplayer
Again, no information on multiplayer has been released. That said, what skateboarding game, let alone one released after 2020, would dare to exclude multiplayer? Skate 4 is expected to continue the series’ tradition of having a multiplayer component. Previous game modes such as 1-Up, Domination, and Own the Lot were excellent experiments in how to adapt skateboarding into new competitive modes that were more complex than simply beating each other’s scores.
Hopefully, the Full Circle team will come up with even more fresh ideas to give this game some legs.
We don’t want to see the way Skate 3 handled offline multiplayer, which required you to buy separate DLC in order to play with more than one person offline.
Gameplay
Without seeing much gameplay, we’ll have to do some detective work and interpretation to piece together a picture of what to expect from Skate 4. To state the obvious, yes, this will still be a skateboarding game in the style of the original games. What’s new or different? We have a few nuggets to consider based on some key things said by the people in the reaction trailer.
That implies that you will be able to get off your board and parkour around the environment to set up big tricks or bomb down ramps from the tops of structures.
We also heard someone mention how nice the open-world looked, so that was an easy addition to the list. Skate 3 had zones that required you to navigate through a menu, so having one seamless playground to skate through feels like a natural, if not overdue, evolution for the series.
The final hint came from someone saying they didn’t want to look like anyone else. To us, this clearly indicates the presence of a robust character creator. Character creators have been a staple in most skateboarding games since their inception, and we enjoy dressing up our skaters in cool clothes and accessories, as well as customizing our boards. It remains to be seen how deep the system will go and how many options there will eventually be, but this tiny tease makes it sound pretty substantial.
Aside from boarding, the latest trailer demonstrated a variety of new ways to move. Characters luge on their boards while also parkouring, swinging, and running around the world.

There may also be a level editor system, assuming it isn’t just developer tools, which could greatly extend the game’s lifespan.
