The Samsung Galaxy S22+ is unquestionably the weird phone in the Galaxy lineup. The entry-level S22 is an appealing option for those trying to save money, while the high-end ultra has all the bells and whistles for big spenders. The S22+ stands awkwardly between the two, failing to establish its own distinct personality. Nonetheless, the S22+ is a fully-featured Samsung Galaxy phone with an amazing spec sheet that is worth investigating.
Samsung Galaxy S22+ Design
The S22+ is the S22’s bigger brother. Unless you compare them side by side, the extra 0.5-inch of screen space won’t be evident, and there’s nothing else to distinguish the S22+ cosmetically. It’s a stylish phone with rounded sides that make it easy to grip. It comes in a variety of hues, including Phantom Black, Phantom White, Green, Burgundy, Graphite, Sky Blue, or Red if purchased from Samsung’s online store.
The phone has the same power and volume button layout as all recent Samsung phones, as well as the characteristic camera bump that has been present since the S21. As with that phone, while such protruding camera bumps may somewhat unbalance the S22+ when sitting on a level surface, they have never bothered me.
The S22+ has an under-screen fingerprint scanner and is water and dust resistant to IP68 standards. Such robustness is necessary for devices that accompany us everywhere and must withstand all of the conditions to which we are subjected on a daily basis. Furthermore, the adoption of Gorilla Glass Victus+ has made the screen extremely durable. Unlike prior generations of Galaxy phones, neither the S22+ nor my S22 Ultra has been plagued by the minuscule scratches that appeared to build so quickly on the S21 series.

Samsung Galaxy S22+ Software and Performance
The S22+ operated admirably throughout my time with it. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor handled every mobile application I threw at it, and its 8GB of RAM provides ample multitasking. Even with the graphics settings at their highest, Dota Underlords performed brilliantly.
When making phone calls, the audio quality of the speakers and microphones is superb, and I was able to easily comprehend and be understood. The speakers offer adequate loudness and can provide a good version of 2Cellos’ cover of Thunderstruck.
I’ve always liked Samsung’s Android interface, and Android 12 on the S22+ is no exception. It is simple to use and is supported with a highly responsive touchscreen. Samsung has a large selection of proprietary applications, both pre-installed and purchasable through the Galaxy marketplace. Normally, I’d be cautious of built-in software, but I use Samsung’s software on a regular basis, including Samsung notes, Expert RAW, and Galaxy Wearable.
Samsung Galaxy S22+ Connectivity
I put the S22+ through its paces on USCellular with the same sim card that I use in my S22 Ultra. Using Ookla internet speed testing, the S22+ fared similarly to the S22 Ultra, and the S22+, in general, functioned as expected. The S22+ supports Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2, both of which performed admirably.
It’s worth noting that the S22+ supports ultra-wideband, something it shares with the S22 Ultra but lacks in the original S22. Such networks do not exist in my area and are not generally available, but they are useful if you reside somewhere with ultra-wideband access.
The S22+ is touted to have improved overall reception thanks to its enhanced antenna, but in my tests, it provided no discernible advantage over comparable phones, at least in my location. If you reside in a more populated region, your experience will most certainly be different, but in smaller towns and rural areas, you’re likely to have the same poor service regardless of whatever phone you use.

Display
The S226.6-inch +’s Dynamic AMOLED display is stunning, with deep blacks and vivid colors, and it is HDR 10+ certified. Its FHD+ resolution isn’t particularly amazing on paper, but I didn’t detect any loss of crispness as a result. The 120hz refresh rate allows for fluid navigation. The screen is flat, with no curved corners as seen on some Samsung phones, and has a thin black bezel around it.
Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus Camera
The S22+ has the same camera as the S22, which isn’t a bad thing. Instead of the unsatisfactory digital zoom of the S21 series of Galaxy smartphones, the S22+ camera includes an optical 3x zoom camera. If you rely extensively on telescopic lenses, as I do, this makes a huge impact. The S22+ comes with a 50MP f/1.8 main camera and a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera in addition to the 10MP f/2.4 telephoto camera. Except for the ultra-wide camera, all have optical image stabilization. The punch-hole selfie camera has a 10MP sensor and an F/2.2 aperture.
I was quite pleased with the results from all four cameras. They produce the same high-quality outcomes that I have come to expect from Samsung phones. The S22+ produces clear, vividly colored photographs right out of the camera, and you can process the image yourself in Lightroom Mobile or other editing tools by installing Samsung’s Expert RAW app.
If you have used a Samsung Galaxy phone in the last few years, you should be fairly familiar with the interface. Swiping through the many available settings and modes is quick and fluid, and there are lots of modes to choose from, including super slow motion, portrait, and timelapse.
The S22+ can record video in 8K at 24fps and 4K at 60fps. I can confirm that this phone captures video just as well as still images, and I’d be completely content to use footage from it alongside footage recorded with my pro-grade camera gear in my YouTube videos.
Battery
One of the S22 primary +’s advantages is its huge 4,500mAh battery and rapid 45W charging. It also has 15W wireless charging and 4.5W reverse wireless charging capabilities. In practice, this translates to a phone that can easily go through the day without needing to be recharged halfway through.
