Roborock S4 Max: The Robot Vacuum with Lidar Navigation

Roborock S4 Max: Everyone wants a clean house, but no one seems to have time to accomplish it. Through scheduling and automation, a robot vacuum can save time. I recently got the opportunity to test the Roborock S4 Max in my home for four weeks, comparing its numerous features and capabilities to comparable devices on the market.

Roborock S4 Max

What is Roborock S4 Max?

The Roborock S4 Max is a one-purpose robot vacuum that is operated via a smartphone app. It has a stated price of $430, which puts it in the middle of the Roborock vac pricing range, although it can sometimes be purchased for as little as $310 at a variety of stores. While certain Roborock models, such as the S7, provide mopping capabilities, this is not one of them. The S4 Max, like previous variants such as the S6 MavV, includes laser-guided navigation and smart mapping. On the underside, there’s a rubber-bristled corner brush as well as a small double roller brush.

The S4 Max supports multi-level mapping, allowing it to be used on up to four stories. It also offers Automatic Carpet Boost, a greater suction option to suck dirt out of carpet fibers, and a significantly longer cleaning time/battery life to allow it to clean bigger areas on a single charge.

Roborock S4 Max with Laser Lidar Navigation

Because of its lidar navigation technology, the Roborock S4 Max can “see” around obstacles in your home. The bot bounces lasers off the walls and furniture to figure out how your house is laid out and where it can and cannot go. This information is then utilized to create a precise map of your house. Using the map, you can assign certain rooms for cleaning one at a time. This laser mapping also prevents the vacuum from slamming into table legs or walls.

My vacuum had built a functional (and accurate!) map after just one outing, which is substantially faster than some of the more expensive bots I’ve examined. In addition, unlike many other bots, the Roborock S4 Max is ready to label and design your home map right now, as opposed to other bots that may require numerous passes to create the map.

How the Roborock app does

The controls on the top of the vacuum let you start, stop, and direct your robot home, but the true power is in the Roborock app. You may start and stop cleanups, build virtual boundaries or no-go zones, select your cleaning power, and change your house maps or re-label rooms.

The program allows you to construct room separators, merge spaces, and name them for more specialized cleaning. The software is simple to use and discover the controls and settings for items, so I was able to label my house quickly. I was able to identify that region on my map and send out the S4 Max the next time I wanted to do a focused clean of my corridor. I was also able to arrange for different rooms to be vacuumed on separate days.

Roborock S4 Max Performance

The S4 is “hard to trap,” according to Roborock’s marketing, and it’s “designed to escape the locations where others might become stuck.” During my evaluation period, I discovered this to be true; I never saw it become stuck once. In terms of climbing ability, the S4 Max never became tangled on flooring transitions, edges, or rugs. I can certainly tell that of all the robot vacuums I’ve tested, this one got stuck the fewest times.

If you’re experiencing trouble with a bot becoming stuck, you can set up virtual barriers or no-go zones. You can prevent your robot from accessing specified areas or corners that pose an issue. The Roborock software is used to create these zones. I can affirm that it is quick, simple, and user-friendly.

The Suction power on the carpet

I was quite impressed with how well the Roborock S4 cleaned my carpets and rugs. When I emptied the trash can, I saw it had collected everything from extremely fine dust to larger debris, pet hair, and even pieces of plastic.

S4 Max Multi-floor cleaning

One of the most notable aspects of the S4 Max is its ability to memorize up to four separate floors, as well as each room on those floors. This may not appear to be a major deal — after all, it can’t climb stairs on its own — but it’s actually one of the device’s main selling features. Unless you wish to buy a different robot vacuum for each floor, the multi-level cleaning means you only need to let it investigate the area once.

After it has vacuumed and mapped that level, all you have to do is place the vacuum on the floor you wish to clean. The S4 Max will remember each room and recognize its location automatically. It will provide the same cleaning performance regardless of which floor of your home it is on, making it ideal for whole-house cleaning with minimal interaction from you; all it requires is a little help up and downstairs.

How does the Roborock S4 Max clean the floor?

The Roborock S4 was also readily able to manage the many varieties of flooring: I have carpet, rugs, tile, and hardwood, and it cleaned each of them thoroughly, including vacuuming dirt out of gaps in the grout on my floor. I put robot vacuums through their paces by dropping flour or sugar, rice, cracker crumbs, or cereal on both carpet and hard floors. I can confirm that the bot quickly picked up on everything, and what it didn’t get on the first pass, it got on future passes. The Roborock S4 Max cleans in a very linear manner as well; after going around a room, you can see the wonderful lines it leaves on the carpet.

S4 Max Bin emptying

This vacuum’s onboard dustbin should be emptied after each use. If this bin was filled, I didn’t receive any notifications from the app, neither push nor passive alerts. It would be wonderful if it could give me emptying reminders, but I’m not sure if that’s because it’s not built to do so, or if my iPhone isn’t cooperating with the Roborock app.

Battery life and cleaning time

The vacuum is set to be parked on its charging base by default, which means it is always ready to go. With a full battery, Roborock claims the S4 can clean for up to 180 minutes, or over 300 square meters (3,200 square feet), and we can confirm that the S4 Max cleaned my entire main floor (approximately 1,500 square feet) without needing to recharge.
