There are times when not all the elements are coming together for the perfect shot. If you are in dire need of inspiration, you can always rely on your creative mind—and these few photography techniques that will make your photos go from blah to breathtaking.

Double exposure

Double exposure, also called multiple exposures, is a technique used in photography and film that allows features two or more shots on top of each other, creating a creatively surreal effect. Most cameras in this digital age have built-in settings for double-exposed images but if yours doesn’t, you can manually layer the images together using an editing tool or software.

Photography Techniques

Overexposure

Although this technique is often considered an issue with imagery, photos that are too bright can help boost the impact on viewers. Overly bright images give them a dream-like, almost ethereal appearance that can make viewers stare and wonder. In the film, it’s often used to represent heaven or the presence of supernatural beings.

Forced perspective

You don’t have to be a professional photographer to be able to pull off an image with forced perspective. You’ve probably seen great shots (and epic fails) of tourists taking this kind of photo in front of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the setting sun, a full moon, and other places and events. By placing your subject in a certain position, you can make them appear larger or smaller than they really are, or make it seem like they are interacting with people or objects around them in rather impossible ways.

Chiaroscuro

This technique comes from a combined term of two Italian words: Chiaro, which means clear or bright; and Oscuro, which means dark or obscure. The notable trait of photos with this technique is the stark contrast between light and dark, helping put an impossibly unnoticeable emphasis on clarity and details. This effect can be used on both colored and B/W photos.

Mirror photography

This has become a popular technique used in prenup and wedding photography. But you don’t always have to shoot right by the sea, pool, lake, or any large body of water. Photographers have become so creatively resourceful with this, using something as small and surprising as a water puddle to create a reflection that enhances the dramatic effect of photos. You can even get more creative by focusing on reflections that are not exactly the mirror image of your main subject. Try capturing reflections of the same subject but showing a different angle or perspective. You can also capture reflected subjects that are completely different from your main subject.

The only limit is your imagination

If you can dream it, you can achieve it. Creating unique photographs that make an impact on your viewers should not be restricted by rules and the norm. Get out of your box and explore these photography techniques. Tinker with your settings and try out different angles and subjects. Who knows? You might stumble upon a new photography technique that will take your images to a whole new level of awesome.
