Did you know that smartphones are dirtier than toilet seats? Studies have shown that they can have as many as 25,000 bacteria per square inch. While most of them are harmless, some can cause serious illnesses. The fact that we place our phones close to our faces doesn’t help either.

That’s why it’s so important to clean your device—ideally once a day.

How to Clean an iPhone Safely

  1. Use Isopropyl Alcohol

Dampen a clean microfiber cloth with isopropyl alcohol and use it to wipe your phone. Don’t use paper towels; they’re abrasive and can scratch the surface.

Alternatively, you can use a pre-wet alcohol wipe. Just make sure that it’s 70% isopropyl alcohol (lower concentrations aren’t as effective at killing germs).

And if you’re using a hard plastic case, make sure to wipe that down too. As for leather cases, you want to clean them with water and a mild cleaner. Don’t use alcohol as it can damage the material.

  1. Use a UV Sanitizer

UV sanitizers are great for nonporous objects such as cellphones; they use ultraviolet light to target the DNA structure of bacteria and viruses and are capable of killing up to 99% of germs. They won’t damage your device either.

And they’re super easy to use—just put your phone flat into the box. Close the lid with the power source connected and the sterilization process will begin. Generally speaking, it’ll only take a few minutes.

Depending on the UV sanitizer that you’re using, however, you may have to flip the phone over to sanitize the backside.

  1. Use an Antimicrobial Cleaning Cloth

Antimicrobial cleaning cloths are one of the most cost-effective options when it comes to cleaning an iPhone (you can get one for just a few dollars).

They’re different from regular cleaning cloths in that silver is embedded within the fibers. When exposed to air, it’ll oxidize and release silver ions, which are lethal to bacteria and viruses.

Just dampen the cloth with a bit of water and use it to wipe your phone. You won’t have to worry about it scratching the screen since the material is soft. Just don’t get any of the openings wet.
