GTA 6 release date: There was a time when Rockstar would release a new Grand Theft Auto game almost every year. That’s a far cry from the current release schedule, which includes multiple Grand Theft Auto V rereleases, but it hasn’t stopped us from fantasizing about the next instalment, which has yet to be officially announced. Sure, we have Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition to play in the meantime, as well as GTA: San Andreas for Oculus Quest 2, but what about Grand Theft Auto 6?
While GTA 6 has yet to be named, we do know Rockstar is working on “a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series,” as confirmed on Twitter. We can assume this is GTA 6, but keep in mind that the company has previously released non-numbered instalments such as Vice City and San Andreas.
Several reports claim that GTA 6 has been in development for some time. As previously reported, Rockstar has reportedly halted production on Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption remasters to focus on GTA 6. This decision was made in response to the negative response to Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive, which was riddled with technical flaws and bugs. While this is disappointing news for fans of GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption remasters, it does bode well for the release of GTA 6.
Then, in a Bloomberg report, the game’s protagonists, possible release date, and even details about Rockstar Games’ workplace improvements were revealed. Following a massive leak in September 2022 that revealed several gameplay elements, GTA 6 appears to be well underway.
In light of this, what do we know about GTA 6? When can we expect it to be released? How will it fare in comparison to previous entries? Which platforms will it be available on? We’ll go over everything we know about Grand Theft Auto 6.

GTA 6 leaks
The biggest leak in Rockstar Games history occurred in mid-September 2022, depicting early footage of GTA 6. Teapotuberhacker, a GTA message board user, shared around 90 video clips, including in-development gameplay footage.
Although the gameplay footage was incomplete, it is most likely an accurate representation of the final product. The video showed an armed robbery, as well as various animations and even sections with voice acting. Even though this footage was not intended for public consumption, some social media users expressed dissatisfaction with the game’s appearance. This sparked a discussion about leaks in general, and many developers shared early footage of critically acclaimed games as a result.
Following the leaks, Rockstar Games confirmed their authenticity while stating that the hack should not affect development. “We are extremely disappointed that any details of our next game have been shared with you in this manner,” said Rockstar Games.
“Work on the next Grand Theft Auto game will continue as planned, and we remain as committed as ever to providing you, our players, with an experience that truly exceeds your expectations.”
Platforms
Given the rumored release date, GTA 6 will most likely be released for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC (though PC launches are typically after the console release). Since the original PlayStation, each console generation has received at least one GTA game, and we don’t expect that trend to change anytime soon.
While we don’t know much about this game, it will most likely be an ambitious project, which means Rockstar will most likely skip the previous generation because the PS4 and Xbox One won’t be able to handle it (at least not without some serious compromises). Similarly, it’s unlikely to come to the Nintendo Switch, though it could launch for whatever Nintendo’s next platform is (though don’t count on it). A cloud version for the Nintendo Switch, like Hitman 3, Control, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, is also possible.

GTA 6 Trailer
There isn’t a GTA 6 trailer yet, but one could be released in 2022. On November 2, 2011, the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto V was released, which could give us an idea of the marketing timeline. GTA V did not come out until two years later, in 2013. The first GTA IV trailer was released in March 2007, a year before the game’s release date. So, assuming the 2024 to 2025 release window is correct, we should see a GTA 6 trailer within the next year or so.
Gameplay
The open-world exploration, fast cars, and action-packed gameplay have always been at the heart of GTA. The series evolved with the release of GTA III in 2001, which was the first instalment to be presented in 3D. (instead of the 2D, top-down perspective). Then GTA Online expanded on the formula once more, focusing on multiplayer connectivity while retaining everything that makes GTA so enjoyable.
It’s unclear whether GTA 6 will revolutionize the formula once more, but given how long it’s been in the works, expectations are high. GTA 6 could take place in a familiar setting, such as a modernized version of Vice City. Henderson, at least, appears to believe so. According to Schreier, the map itself will most likely evolve, as seen in GTA Online.
Others believe GTA 6 will feature the entire United States, which is a lofty but plausible claim.
“Our goal with every new project is always to significantly exceed what we’ve previously delivered,” Rockstar stated in 2022.
According to a Bloomberg report from July 2022, GTA 6 will include the series’ first female protagonist, a Latina who will work alongside another character. This pair appears to be similar to bank robbers Bonnie and Clyde. Similarly, the company is said to want to be more sensitive to marginalized groups. Historically, no group was safe from being mocked in GTA games, but GTA 6 appears to be much more thoughtful in how it handles its satire.
Leslie Benzies, Rockstar’s then-president, told Develop magazine about the series’ future in 2013. “We’re not sure what GTA 6 will be, but we have some ideas,” Benzies said. “We have about 45 years’ worth of ideas that we want to pursue.” We’ll choose the best ones. It all starts with an idea. The first question is where it will be located. That then defines the mission; you’re doing something different in LA than you are in New York or Miami. The map and story are developed together, and the story is a basic flow of how it works so that the mission can be layered in.”
Finally, there isn’t much information to go on, and given how long ago the statement was made, a lot has probably changed by now. However, the team began thinking about GTA 6 in 2013, so it has had years to iterate on ideas.
Furthermore, customization, player choice, and explosive gameplay will most likely return. We’d love it if GTA 6 included sandbox-style missions, giving players multiple ways to complete objectives akin to Hitman 3. This would be difficult to accomplish, especially in an open-world game, but if any studio could do it, it would be Rockstar. Rockstar will have much more freedom to incorporate ideas that make sense now that technology has advanced so dramatically. We’d also like to see characters from previous GTA games return, such as Claude from GTA III, Tommy Vercetti from Vice City, and Carl Johnson from GTA San Andreas.
Finally, GTA 6 will almost certainly be playable in both the first and third person. This mechanic has appeared in GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, and given its popularity, it is likely to return in the next Grand Theft Auto game.
Armed robberies are likely to appear in the game based on leaked footage from September 2022; however, because the footage was unfinished, it’s unclear how this will appear in the final product.

DLC
The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony are two DLC expansions for Grand Theft Auto IV. These single-player add-ons expanded the story and gave players a reason to come back. Many people expected GTA V to get the same treatment, but all of the game’s post-launch support went to GTA Online instead. Since then, the online mode has received numerous major expansions, including The Diamond Casino Heist and The Cayo Perico Heist, among others.
The point is that GTA 6 will almost certainly receive DLC after launch, but it’s unclear whether it will focus on multiplayer, single-player, or both. After the game is officially revealed, we’ll have a better idea of its post-launch DLC rollout.
Multiplayer
The introduction of GTA Online was arguably the most noticeable change in GTA V. This mode became the game’s backbone, attracting millions of players (and dollars) for a shared experience. The base game is fantastic, but GTA Online is what has kept GTA V relevant nearly a decade after it was released. The point is that GTA 6 will almost certainly include multiplayer functionality. It’s unclear whether this means the entire game will be played online or if there will be a dedicated multiplayer mode like the previous instalment, but we can almost guarantee it will have an online mode.
Given the success of GTA Online, it’s unlikely that Rockstar will remove multiplayer functionality from the next instalment.
GTA 6 release date
The release date of Grand Theft Auto 6 has yet to be officially announced by Rockstar, so it is unknown when it will be available. However, numerous leakers and reporters have claimed that it will be launched in 2024 or later. Tom Henderson, who covers Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Grand Theft Auto, is one such leaker.
While this most likely means we’ll have to wait a long time to play it, it does indicate the existence of the game in the first place. The game has yet to be revealed, but the number of credible leakers and reporters who have confirmed that GTA 6 is in development is encouraging.
According to Jason Schreier, a video game reporter for Bloomberg, “Everything Tom Henderson has said about the game matches up with what I’ve heard.” Schreier has most likely heard from Rockstar developers who have provided information about the game’s development.
Following Rockstar’s announcement of the next GTA game, Schreier took to Twitter to confirm his prediction that it would be released in 2024. He hinted that a full reveal could take place later in 2022.
In February 2022, Rockstar stated, “We’re pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the series is underway.” We don’t know how long it’s been in the works, but development didn’t happen overnight. “We look forward to sharing more information as soon as it is available, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details.”
According to a Bloomberg report from July 27, 2022, multiple Rockstar employees believe the game will not be released until 2024 at the earliest, despite being in the works for some time. The game’s development has been slowed as a result of a greater emphasis on healthier workplace practices with less required overtime.
One thing to keep in mind is that according to a report from Rockstar Mag’ (as relayed by DSO Gaming), GTA 6 is “in development hell.” GTA 6’s development stalled after the departure of Dan Houser, who co-founded Rockstar. According to Rockstar Mag’, GTA 6 is the “most chaotic project Rockstar has ever developed.” This could have a significant impact on the game’s production schedule, pushing it beyond the 2024-2025 release window.

Pre-order
Pre-orders for GTA 6 are currently unavailable, as expected. Based on the release of GTA V, you may be able to pre-order the next game around 10 months before its release date. GTA V was available for pre-order in November 2012.
In 2013, pre-orders became available years before a game’s release. It’s now far more common for games to be announced and released in a short period, so it’s possible Rockstar will employ this strategy when marketing GTA 6. In any case, don’t expect to be able to pre-order for a long time.
