What is Razer Edge
When Snapdragon announced its new gaming chipset, Razer essentially teased this project. This is the first dedicated Android handheld to feature the Snapdragon G3X Gen 1 Gaming Platform, a gaming-optimized offshoot of Qualcomm’s mobile processor. Verizon is also putting its 5G “Ultra Wideband” weight behind the handheld, but thankfully, there are options between a Wi-Fi version and a more expensive, Verizon-exclusive 5G version into which you can insert a SIM card for true wireless mobility.
Whether you are playing League of Legends Wild Rift, Genshin Impact, or Call of Duty Mobile, the Razer Edge 5G could become the ultimate Android handheld gaming experience, bolstered by services like Xbox Game Pass for scenarios where cloud gaming is feasible.
The announcement comes on the heels of Logitech’s G Cloud announcement, which is entirely focused on cloud gaming. While the G Cloud should be able to run some Android games locally, the chipset is unlikely to be powerful enough to compete with Razer’s Snapdragon G3X. Finally, the true comparison comes down to cost. The Logitech G Cloud has already sparked debate with its device, which is entirely focused on niche cloud gaming scenarios despite being comparable in price to devices like the Xbox Series S, Steam Deck, or Nintendo Switch, all of which can run games natively.
With prices starting at $399.99, the Razer Edge promises to be an Android-native gaming-first option. Razer Edge Specs
Razer has positioned its latest handheld as a full-fledged mobile gaming companion, with specifications that allow it to run all of the latest titles while also tapping into the growing list of cloud gaming experiences. It all rests on the Snapdragon G3X Gen 1 Gaming Platform, which was expressly designed with mobile gaming in mind, distinguishing the device as a top-tier Android gaming handheld.
The Razer Edge is a two-piece device, with a standalone tablet and Nintendo Switch Joy-Con-style controls. Each Razer Edge comes with a Razer Kishi V2 Pro, a revised version of the company’s mobile gamepad designed to function as the device’s native controller. The Kishi V2 Pro improves on the original Kishi by adding Razer HyperSense haptics and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
While companies such as Logitech have announced cloud-optimized Android gaming handhelds, the Razer Edge is more akin to the Steam Deck, with hardware capable of running all games locally. Razer Edge Release Rate
Razer has stated that the Razer Edge will be released in January 2023, with a 5G and separate Wi-Fi model planned at the time. Both the Razer Edge Wi-Fi and 5G will be available only in the United States, with the 5G model exclusive to Verizon. The Razer Edge Wi-Fi starts at $399.99, while the Razer Edge 5G price has yet to be determined.
While Verizon will sell Razer Edge 5G models, the Wi-Fi model will be available through the Razer website and select Razer stores. The company has also opened reservations, allowing interested buyers to secure a shipment with a refundable $5 deposit, with more information on orders to come.
Razer has stated that it intends to show more of the Edge at CES 2023, which will take place next January, where we can expect to learn more about a firm release date and what to expect from the launch.
